I’m at Children’s Hospital with Evangeline.

The Orthopedic doctor decided to admit her immediately and do surgery tomorrow to try to get rid of all the infected bone. He said it is like cancer. It eats away at the bone and he has to be certain he gets all of the infection because it spreads. He doesn’t know how far the infection has gone, but she has had some fevers since we have been home indicating that it may be spreading. Osteomyelitis can also become septic, which would be very dangerous.

Apparently, he may not get all the infection in one time. He will leave the wound open, and may have to go back in several times before he gets all of the infection.

They will start IV antibiotics tonight.

Evangeline cried hard when Mark left with Eliza. She fought and kicked until we got her settled down. I know she has experience with hospitals in China, and I’m sure she has some unhappy memories.

She’s just finished a pop sickle now, and is watching a movie.

I’m laying on the couch next to her bed.

It has been a very long day.

This morning we took Eliza to the adoption clinic here at Children’s. We met with an attachment specialist, a cardiologist, and the specialists at CHOPAdopt. It was very helpful to talk to the social worker. She gave us some good ideas about how to set up a structure for Eliza in which she can work toward goals we have for her behavior.

We also found out that her head must have stopped growing when she was around three years old. She has microcephalus. In all honesty, I did recognize this in China when I saw her, but I kept second guessing myself. The director of the orphanage reassured me that Eliza actually did write the letters to us, and that she attended public school.

I did notice behaviors while we were in China and have noticed some since we have been home that have concerned me, but we have just been given such little information and without language, it is difficult to assess her developmental status.

All of this is most certainly daunting.

God’s hand has been in these adoptions. He has blessed us miraculously.

He brought the girls home. He knew all of this. I know He has a plan.

And He is strong when I am weak.

We do thank you for your prayers.

  1. Hi Diane,
praying for strength for you, and for your sweet family. May the Lord give you rest and peace, and work out all these details for His glory. Sending you love.

  2. Diane,
You’re correct when you say that is all in His plan, God has had a plan for the girls and you since before you were born. He has sent Evangaline and Eliza to you guys so that they can experience the love of a family and have the medical care they need. We are not to question what He does but trust in faith that He has a reason for doing it. Remember what it says in Proverbs “Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
