Evangeline is in surgery now.

I was able to talk with the surgeon before she went back regarding the integrity of Evangeline’s foot and the results of last night’s MRI. The first metatarsal bone and toe are 75-85% gone. There is a 90% chance that he will have to amputate the toe and metatarsal bone. He will investigate the integrity of the other bones while he is performing the surgery.

He expects to leave the wound open with a drain. He will culture the infection, and depending on the results, she will have to stay in the hospital anywhere from a week to many weeks. She may be able to come home with IV antibiotics after a week. Again, depending on the type of infection brewing.

He will not be able to rebuild the foot because she has little blood flow and very little nerve function in that foot. Without a healthy bed to work in, there would be nothing to hold the reconstruction together.

The other problem is that she will continue to get sores on the foot with further risk of infection.

There really are no other options. If he were to leave the disintegrated bone in her foot and save the toe, she would be looking at six month hospital stay with an open drain and six months IV antibiotics. And even so, there is still a good chance she would have to lose the toe and or foot.

I’m in the surgery waiting room now, and doing just fine. This has always been God’s battle to fight. I trust Him.

  1. found your blog through Linny Saunders. Have been following and praying. I am a mom of 6 with our last 2 adopted. We live outside Philly. I will be down at CHOP next wed. with my youngest. If you are still there, you will have to tell me what special treat YOU and Evangeline are craving and I will deliver it to you 🙂 I know when I was staying in the hospital when my little guy had surgery the days could be long and tiring. My prayer will be that you will be home by next wed, but if not perhaps Leo and I can deliver you a treat.

  2. Praying even now for Evangeline. As a critical care nurse, it sounds like the surgeon is doing the right thing for your daughter. Once the infected bones are cut away, she will have less pain and the foot can actually heal and Evangeline can begin to lead a normal life! She has been living with an open wound and infected bones, the partial foot amputation will not even daunt this brave little girl! What an inspiration she is!
