I’ve been thinking a lot about faith lately.

You know, the kind of faith Jesus talked about when he said if we had faith the size of a mustard seed, we could say to the mountain, “Move,” and it would move.

I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”  ~Matt 17:20

Or the kind of faith Jesus must have been talking about when he told Peter that anyone who has faith in Him will do even greater works than he did because he was going to the Father.

11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.  ~John 14:11-14

I can’t help but feel that God wants to do so much more through us if only we would believe.

In the New Testament, Jesus spoke of miracle-working faith, faith that would move mountains, faith that would heal, faith that would feed the five thousand from one little boy’s lunch.

George Müller had that kind of faith. Through faith he provided for over three thousand orphans in his lifetime.  He asked God to provide, and then waited for the funds to come in.

Not once, even when asked to do so, did he ever tell anyone how pressing or how great were the needs.  He always told this to the Lord, and expected God to move upon someone to supply the needs. ~ From George Muller, Man of Faith and Miracles, by Basil Miller

The more I have stepped out in faith, the more I see how very foolish faith often looks by the world’s standards. In so many ways, I understand the concerns of the world. Faith isn’t practical. It isn’t worldly. It is not careful. In fact, it is a reckless abandon of all things that we have come to depend on in this world.

By any standard, other than God’s, stepping out in faith when things don’t make sense in the practical is just crazy and even irresponsible.

But to God, it is the only way. Reckless abandon is the life to which we have been called.

Faith, by it’s very nature, is believing in something we cannot see.

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11;1

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it shall be yours. ~Jesus, Mark 11;24

It is to a life of faith we have been called.

3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. ~Hebrews 11;3

This world, and everything that is tangible, was spoken into existence. It was made from the invisible. Our lives too, are not made from that which we can hold in our hands, but from that which we believe.

We walk by faith, not by sight. ~2 Corinthians 5:7

Faith is not a feeling, although sometimes faith feels good. Faith is a choice. It is a decision to trust the One who calls us, to trust His faithfulness. It is the decision to step when we can’t see where our foot will land.

I have read a couple blog posts lately about families who stepped out in faith when they couldn’t see a way, and I share them here with you.

More than I could have ever imagined.

What a difference a year makes.

God blessed these families for their faith, and it was through faith that these precious children came home.

I want that kind of faith. Don’t you?

Blessings All!

  1. Faith. It doesn’t always come easy to me. Oh I never have trouble thinking God can do anything. ANYTHING! But I feel unworthy that He would do it for me. These verses and your words seeped right into my heart.
